So much to see during Rotterdam Art Week

So much to see during Rotterdam Art Week

Have you missed visiting places and SEEING beautiful things during the lockdown? If so, Rotterdam is definitely the place to be next weekend. The city will be filled with exhibitions, pop-up shows, and art and design fairs during Rotterdam Art Week...

Center of Rotterdam Art Week will be Art Rotterdam and design fair OBJECT, which will be held from the 1st until the 4th of July at the iconic Van Nelle Factory and the HAKA-building respectively. If there was ever a time when artists and designers were eager to connect with the public it has to be now, after months of being in lockdown. At Art Rotterdam, over 100 galleries will present work by up-and-coming artists but also more established ones. At the Van Nelle Factory visitors can see the art, meet the artists, and of course buy the art.

Design fair OBJECT will be focusing a lot on new design talent, giving recently graduated designers one of the first opportunities to show their work to the public. More than 100 designers will be showing furniture designs, lighting, textiles, jewelry, fashion, and architectural installations. If you see something you like, you can buy it on the spot. A special partnership with Catawiki allows you to also bid on prototypes or special editions of pieces of design in all price ranges.

One of the works on display at OBJECT has a special connection to NanaWoody&John, because of the material it is made of. Design studio Object Density from Eindhoven used deadstock optical lenses provided by a local optician to make a beautiful light piece named Lens Luminaire. An optical lens bends the light beams that fall through it and because no lens is ever the same the result is captivating. The Lens Luminaire shows the beauty of a lens that you can’t see at first sight.

RĒVO is helping children learn how to surf

RĒVO is helping children learn how to surf

Going surfing on a doctor’s order. How cool is that? It may sound a bit strange, but surfing is actually very helpful in improving the quality of life of children with Down Syndrome, ADHD, and forms of autism...

That is why in 2014 the Surf Project was founded. All over the coast of The Netherlands, surf lessons are given to children with Down, autism, and ADHD. The sea has the power to make you forget about any problems you may experience in everyday life. Learning how to surf helps you gain confidence. Confidence that not only shows when in the water, but also in other situations. Because the biggest lesson in learning how to surf lies in overcoming obstacles. And that can be extra difficult when you are dealing with physical and cognitive challenges daily. But once you’ve learned how to ride a wave, you built up the confidence to also try and learn other new things!

The Surf Project works with psychologists and psychiatrists who monitor progression with the children and research the benefits of surfing therapy. With the research, they hope to contribute to making surfing a standard form of therapy for children who need it. The actual surf lessons are given by a large group of dedicated volunteers. To continue the work they do, the Surf Project needs sponsors.

And that is where RĒVO comes in. RĒVO has always had a strong connection to water sports. Their blue water lens is a classic and it is perfect for the bright conditions on the water. With every pair of RĒVO sunglasses, the company is donating to the Surf Project. Last weekend in Zandvoort, they were able to donate another check to this much-needed initiative so children who need it most can keep on riding those waves!

Alpine F1 team finds optical performance partner in Shamir

Alpine F1 team finds optical performance partner in Shamir

It sounds obvious, and yet it is a unique collaboration in the Formula 1 world: the Alpine F1 team is partnering with Shamir Optical Industry in a Vision Performance Lab to ensure their drivers and all other team members have the best vision possible...

When you go as fast as a Formula 1 race car driver does, you want, or better said: you need perfect vision. It takes a millisecond for conditions to change and in that millisecond drivers need to make a decision that will have enormous consequences for their safety, based mostly on what they see. Or don't see. Strangely enough, there hasn't been that much attention to the way vision influences race car driving performances. Until now. Alpine F1 team has found a partner in Shamir, a producer of high-quality lenses. Shamir has been developing and producing lenses since the 1970s and has taken a leading position worldwide in incorporating scientific discoveries into their lenses.

But what is a vision performance lab exactly? Engineers of both Alpine and Shamir will be researching new technologies to improve both racing performances and safety conditions. No more foggy goggles for the pit crew, glare from low sunlight or distorted colors for the drivers. Expertise from both fields will be combined in the search for the highest quality lenses that perform perfectly under all conditions. New developments can be easily tested and if necessary adjusted to the personal needs of the Alpine F1 team members.

It is no coincidence that Alpine and Shamir found each other. Both share the same values: high performance, innovation, precision, safety and teamwork. Antoine Magnan, CEO of strategic partnerships at Alpine, says: 'At Alpine we always look for collaborations with only the best brands. Together, we aim to develop new technologies and materials that will enhance Formula 1 performances, but that will also be useful and interesting for consumers outside of this laboratory that is Formula 1.'
