Italiaanse brillenmaker maakt brillen voor The Ocean Cleanup

De Nederlander Boyan Slat richtte in 2013 The Ocean Cleanup op. Een ambitieus project met als doel de oceanen wereldwijd te ontdoen van zo veel mogelijk plastic afval. Nu heeft hij van dat afval een eerste product gemaakt...

Inmiddels is The Ocean Cleanup een enorm project geworden waar zo’n 100 gekwalificeerde medewerkers dagelijks werken aan enerzijds het ontwikkelen van technologie die ervoor moet zorgen dat de plannen ook werkelijkheid worden en anderzijds het daadwerkelijk uitvoeren ervan.

Wie er meer over wil weten kijkt even op www.theoceancleanup.com. Om de cirkel rond te maken, heeft de Italiaanse brillenfabrikant Safilo voor Boyan en zijn organisatie nu zonnebrillen uit al dat verzamelde plastic gemaakt. Het is het eerste product dat van het afval gemaakt wordt. Al die zonnebrillen krijgen een QR code waarmee de drager een directe connectie met het project en de voortgang ervan heeft. Met de opbrengst van 1 bril kan straks een gebied ter grootte van 24 voetbalvelden opgeschoond worden en als alle 25.000 brillen verkocht zijn gaat dat om maar liefst 500.000 voetbalvelden.

De zonnebrillen zijn exclusief te koop op de website van The Ocean Cleanup en de volledige opbrengst gaat naar de organisatie die het gebruikt om het werk voort te zetten. Ze kosten 199 euro maar daarmee draag je dus ook een beetje bij aan schonere oceanen en rivieren en een betere wereld.

Functionality is not always beautiful and that is why functional adjustments are often hidden and made invisible. At Porsche Design, they think differently. The statement with their latest glasses design is therefore:

"In most designs, the function remains hidden.
But we don’t want to hide something UNIQUE."

Because the new hinges in the most exclusive Porsche Design frame to date are not only a functional improvement, but also very beautiful and should therefore be seen. Back in the late nineteenth century, Jules Morel who started out as a farmer in the French Jura, created his first pince-nez (a pair of glasses with a nose clip and no temples). It was the beginning of the successful eyewear story of Morel. Over the years to come, the company would slowly grow into what it is now: an eyewear brand with a strong heritage and a global reach.

For today’s collection, the brand often finds inspiration in its own archives. For instance, their 1880 collection offers re-interpretations of designs from the earliest days of Morel: delicate frames with a unique look and a vintage feel to them.
